Planning a semester around deadlines you can actually meet

Deadline clustering is predictable, which means it is preventable. A ninety minute planning session at the start of term removes most of the crisis.

Every semester produces the same pattern. Three modules set their major assignment for the same fortnight, nobody planned for it, and the last piece submitted is the weakest. The clustering is visible in week one, which means the crisis in week ten is avoidable.

Map everything before you do anything

Collect every module handbook and put every assessment on one calendar: title, weighting, word count and deadline. Seeing them together is usually enough to reveal the two or three weeks that will hurt. It also reveals the opposite, which is the quiet stretch where work can be moved forward.

  • Work backward from each deadline, not forward from today
  • Allocate time proportional to weighting, not to how interesting the module is
  • Put a personal deadline two days before the real one, without exception
  • Book research time separately from writing time, because they are different work
  • Leave the week of any exam free of coursework deadlines if you possibly can

Start the hard one first

Where two assignments collide, start the one that requires reading rather than the one that requires writing. Reading has an unpredictable tail and writing does not, so the piece with unknown research depth needs the earlier start. The instinct to begin with the easier task is what produces the pattern where the highest-weighted assignment is written last.

Ask early, not late

Tutors answer questions about a brief far more helpfully in week three than in the final forty eight hours, and extension processes at most institutions expect notice rather than a plea on the day. If something genuine has gone wrong, the earlier the conversation, the more options exist.
